"Bringing Up Kari" by Dhan Gopal Mukerji is a heartwarming story about a young Indian boy who forms a unique bond with a baby elephant named Kari. Answer the following questions.

Question 1. The enclosure in which Kari lived had a thatched roof that lay on thick tree stumps. Examine the illustration of Kari’s pavilion on page 8 and say why it was built that way.

Answer: Kary’s pavilion was rested on thick tree stumps so that it could not fall in when he bumped against the poles as he moved about.

Question 2. Did Kari enjoy his morning bath in the river? Give a reason for your answer.

Answer: Kari enjoyed his morning bath as he would lie in the water for hours while the boy rubbed him with sand and squeal with pleasure when the rubbed down water from his back.

Question 3. Finding good twigs for Kari took a long time. Why?

Answer: It took a long time to find good twigs because it was not easy to get tender, delicate and young branches of banyan tree from the dense forest that Kari was fond of.

Question 4. Why did Kari push his friend into the stream?

Answer: Kari pushed his friend into the stream to save a boy who was about to drown in the water.

Question 5. Kari was like a baby. What are the main points of comparison?

Answer: Kari was like a baby because he had to be trained to be good. If he was not told when he was naughty, he would do more mischievous things than ever.

Question 6. Kari helped himself to all the bananas in the house without anyone noticing it. How did he do it?

Answer: Kari silently reached through the window with his trunk while everyone was distracted. He skilfully grabbed all the bananas one by one, using his dexterous trunk. No one noticed as he quietly enjoyed his feast out of sight.

Question 7. Kari learnt the commands to sit and to walk. What were the instructions for each command?

Answer: To instruct Kari to sit down, the boy used to pull him by his ear and saying the command ‘Dhat’. Similarly, to make him walk, he used to pull forward his trunk and saying the command ‘Mali’.

Question 8. What is “the master call”? Why is it the most important signal for an elephant to learn?

Answer: “The master call” is a strange hissing, howling sound. It is used to call the elephant when lost in jungle and need help. It is most important signal for an elephant to learn because the elephant will come to your help only when he recognises your master call.
