Lesson 6. The Talkative Barber (Arabian Nights)

 

Short Summary

"The Talkative Barber" from Arabian Nights is a humorous tale that revolves around a barber known for his incessant chatter. One day, the barber is summoned by the king to shave him, but as he begins his usual chatter, he inadvertently reveals a secret plot against the king. Shocked and fearful, the barber tries to backtrack, but the king realizes the truth and pardons him. In gratitude, the king rewards the barber, who, now wiser, learns the value of keeping certain information to himself. The story is a light-hearted exploration of the consequences of gossip and the importance of discretion.

Answer: The whole story is full of humour. The funniest part is, when the Sultan’s head is left half shaved.

Answer: The Sultan gave Barber, the three pieces of gold, food for his friends and some fruits with the food.

4. Do you think the Sultan was really very generous? Why do you say so?

Answer: The Sultan was really very generous because instead of punishing Barber, he gave him many things so that to complete his shave.
