Poem
3. The Shed (Frank Flynn)
There’s a shed at the
bottom of our garden
With a spider’s web
hanging across the door,
The hinges are rusty
and creak in the wind.
When I’m in bed I lie
and I listen,
I’ll open that door one
day.
There’s a dusty old
window around at the side
With three cracked
panes of glass,
I often think there’s
someone staring at me
Each time that I pass,
I’ll peep through that
window one day.
My brother says there’s
a ghost in the shed
Who hides under the
rotten floorboards,
And if I ever dare to
set foot inside
He’ll jump out and chop
off my head,
But I’ll take a peek
one day.
I know that there isn’t
really a ghost,
My brother tells lies
to keep the shed for his den;
There isn’t anyone
staring or making strange noises
And the spider has been
gone from his web
since I don’t know
when,
I’ll go into that shed
one day soon,
But not just yet...

Short Summary
The poem ‘The Shed’ is written by Frank Flynn. This poem is about a shed that is at the bottom of the garden. In this poem a little child describes the appearance of the shed. He says that the shed is at the bottom of their garden with a spider’s web across the door. He could hear the noise of the rusty hinges at his bed when the winds pass bye. He often thinks that there is someone staring at him through the cracked glass panes of old dusty window whenever he passes by the shed and is sure that one day he will peep through the window. His brother stops him going there by saying that there is a ghost hiding under the rotten floorboards and threatens him if he goes there the ghost will jump out and chop his head off. He knows that there is no ghost and his brother is telling lies. He is sure that there is no one staring or making noises and the spider has also gone. After all, he decides to go into the shed but hesitates and leaves his decision for one day, as he is wants to make himself sure that the shed is safe from all evils.
Working with the Poem
1. Answer the following questions.
Question:
(i) Who is the speaker
in the poem?
Answer:
The poet himself as a
small boy is the speaker in the poem.
Question:
(ii) Is she/he afraid
or curious, or both?
Answer:
He/she is both curious and afraid. He is curious to enter
the shed, but he/she also feels that someone is staring at him from the windows
of the shed.
Question:
(iii) What is she/he
planning to do soon?
Answer:
Soon he/she is planning to take a peep and go into
that shed to overcome his/her fear and curiosity.
Question:
(iv) “But not just
yet...” suggests doubt, fear, hesitation, laziness or something else. Choose
the word which seems right to you. Tell others why you chose it.
Answer:
The phrase “But not
just yet…” suggests hesitation because the speaker wants more time to clarify
his doubt. He is sure that there is no one in the shed but at the same time he
needs courage to enter the shed.
2. Is there a room in
your house or a house in your neighbourhood/locality where you would rather not
go alone, and never at night? If there is such a place and a story to go with
it, let others hear all about it.
Answer:
Now a days there is no
such a room or shed or house near my neighbourhood but there was a shed when I
was a child in my neighbourhood and my parents and elders often forbid me to go
there by saying that there was a ghost in the shed.
