Poem 6. Mystery of the Talking Fan (Maude Rubin)
Â
Mystery of the Talking
Fan
Â
Once
there was a talking fan —
Electrical
his chatter.
I
couldn’t quite hear what he said
And
I hope it doesn’t matter
Because
one day somebody oiled
His
little whirling motor
And
all the mystery was spoiled —
He
ran as still as water.

Â
Short Summary
Â
The poem "Mystery of the Talking Fan" written by Maude Rubin, humorously describes a fan that was perceived as if it were speaking due to the noise it made. The speaker couldn't quite understand the fan's chatter, but it didn't seem to be of great importance. Eventually, someone oiled the fan's motor to make it run more smoothly, and the mystery of its supposed speech was lost. The fan became silent, comparable to water, implying that the noise was eliminated, leaving the once-talkative fan in stillness. The poem plays with the idea of anthropomorphism and the whimsical notion of a talking fan before its motor was oiled.

Question
1. Fans don’t talk, but it is possible to imagine they do. What is it, then,
that sounds like the fan’s chatter?
Answer:
Fans
don’t talk but the poet imagines its sound as chatter. The sound that comes
from the fan is created due to the friction of its motor parts that need oiling.
Â
Question
2. Complete the following sentences.
(i)
The chatter is electrical because…….
Answer:
The
chatter of the fan is electrical because it runs on electricity and the sound is
produced by the dry parts of its electrical motor.
Â
(ii)
It is mysterious because…….
Answer:
The
chatter is mysterious because we cannot understand it.
Â
Question
3. What do you think the talking fan was demanding?
Answer:
The
talking fan was demanding some oil because all the sound created was due to the
friction of its dry parts. When it was oiled, it got silent.
Â
Question
4. How does an electric fan manage to throw so much air when it is switched on?
Answer:
When
an electric fan is switched on its motor starts running at a good speed that pushes
the blades attached to the fan to run in a circular motion throwing so much
air.
Â
Question
5. Is there a ‘talking fan’ in your house? Create a dialogue between the fan
and the mechanic.
Answer:
(The
fan makes a noise and a mechanic comes nearer to check)
Mechanic:
Hey! I just realized that you are a talking fan.
Fan:
Oh, thank God! Yes, I do talk. It’s just that people don’t listen.
Mechanic:
Alright, so tell me. What is the matter?
Fan:
I need some oiling. My motor parts are dry and it becomes hard to rotate them.
Mechanic:
Oh. I will put oil in the motor now.
(Mechanic
puts oil in motor)
Fan:
Thank you so much! Now I run smoothly and silently and give more air.
