Lesson 3. Gopal and the Hilsa Fish (Comics)

 

Short Summary

         ‘Gopal and the Hilsa Fish’ is a comic story. A comic story is told in the form of pictures. These stories are often liked by the children. This story is about Gopal and the Hilsa Fish. It is the season of Hilsa Fish and everyone is talking about it. The king is angry on courtiers because they are also talking about hilsa-fish. The king censures one of the courtiers who feels sorry but soon the king feels guilty and tells them no one can stop anyone from talking about hilsa-fish. He challenges Gopal to buy a huge hilsa-fish and bring it to the palace without asking him a about the fish. Gopal accepts the challenge and dresses himself in a comical way. He manages to buy a huge fish and no one asks a word about the fish, rather the people talk about him instead of fish. He reaches palace and gets appreciation from the king for completing the challenge.

Question 1.

Why did the king want no more talk about the hilsa-fish?

Answer:

The king did not want to talk more about the hilsa fish because he knew that that was the season of hilsa-fish and no could stop talk about hilsa-fish even for five minutes. He did not want to hear the same talks again and again so he got annoyed.

Question 2.

What did the king ask Gopal to do to prove that he was clever?

Answer:

The king challenged Gopal and asked him to buy a huge hilsa fish and bring it to the palace without asking anyone a word about it, to prove himself clever.

What three things did Gopal do before he went to buy his hilsa-fish?

Answer:

Before Gopal went to buy his hilsa-fish, he firstly half shaved his face, then he smeared himself with ash, and then dressed himself with disgraceful rags.

How did Gopal get inside the palace to see the king after he had bought the fish?

Answer:

To get inside the palace to see the king, Gopal danced and sang loudly at the gate of the palace. The king heard the noise and asked the men to send him in. In this way he met the king inside the palace.

Explain why no one seemed to be interested in talking about the hilsa-fish which Gopal had bought.

Answer:

No one seemed to be interested in talking about the hilsa-fish because they were interested in the comical appearance of Gopal.

Working with Language

1. Notice how in a comic book, there are no speech marks when characters talk. Instead, what they say is put in a speech ‘bubble’. However, if we wish to repeat or ‘report’ what they say, we must put it into reported speech.

 

Change the following sentences in the story to reported speech. The first one has been done for you.

(i) How much did you pay for that hilsa?

The woman asked the man how much he had paid for that hilsa.

(ii) Why is your face half-shaven?

Answer:

Gopal’s wife asked him why his face was half-shaven.

(iii) I accept the challenge, Your Majesty.

Answer:

Gopal told the king that he accepted the challenge.

(iv) I want to see the king.

Answer:

Gopal told the guards that he wanted to see the king.

(v) Bring the man to me at once.

Answer:

The king ordered the guard to bring the to him at once.

Answer: The stag says that he was proud of his horns that could have caused his death and ashamed of his legs that saved his life.

 

Queston 3:

Now write the story in your own words. Give it a title.

 

Answer:

A stag in a forest went to drink water in a nearby pond. He saw his reflection in the water and proudly said to himself that his horns are very beautiful. But he was hurt when he saw his ugly legs. Abruptly, he saw some hunters coming towards him. He began to run and wanted to hide somewhere in the bushes. He was not able to hide himself in the bushes because of his horns. As the hunters were very close to him, he preferred run than to hide. By running fast with his legs, he saved himself from being hunt. He then thought to himself that he was proud of his horns that could have caused him death and ashamed of legs that saved his life. He then accepted that Nature has made everything useful.
