Lesson 2. A Gift of Chappals (Vasantha Surya)

Short Summary

‘A Gift of Chappals’ by Vasantha Surya is a story that involves the characters of a family. The story almost, revolves around four mischievous, kind-hearted but simple children who always want to help others. The story is narrated by the author herself. Mridu, Lalli, Ravi and Meena are cousins. They meet at Rukku Mani’s house where they see a kitten drinking milk in a coconut shell. Ravi tells them that the kitten is a descendant of none other than the Mahabalipuram Rishi-cat. Meanwhile, Lalli is learning music from a bony type of music teacher. Beggar comes but Rukku Mani asks Ravi to send him away. The three children, Mridu, Meena and Ravi see the rashes of burns on the bare feet of the beggar and feel pity on him. They take the chappals of the music teacher and give them to the beggar. The beggar wears them and vanishes from the site. In the meantime, the music teacher asks for and searches for his chappals. Rukku Mani gives him the chappals of Gopu Mama and he also leaves the site. Rukku Mani reminds the usual behaviour of Gopu Mama of throwing off his shoes and socks and hurrying to wear his chappals when he comes home. She laughs and asks them, what he is going to say, when she will tell him about his chappals.
