Lesson 1. Three Questions (Leo Tolstoy)

Short Summary

"The Three Questions" is a short story written by Leo Tolstoy in 1903. Leo Tolstoy was a Russian writer who wrote many tales and this story is a part of his collection of tales. It revolves around a king who is in search of answers to three important questions that would help him become a wise ruler. The questions are as follows:

1. When is the right time to do something?

2. Who are the right people to listen to?

3. What is the most important thing to do?

The king seeks advice from various wise men in his kingdom, but he receives conflicting answers. Unsatisfied, he embarks on a journey to consult a hermit who is known for his wisdom. The hermit lives in a remote forest.

On his way to the hermit's abode, the king encounters a wounded man and decides to help him instead of continuing his journey. He tends to the man's wounds and stays with him until he recovers. The king puts aside his desire for answers to help someone in need, realizing that the right time to do something is when there is a person who needs assistance.

Later, a dangerous situation arises when an enemy army attacks the king's kingdom. The king is torn between seeking advice from his trusted advisors or trusting his own instincts. However, he recalls the second question and realizes that in times of crisis, he should listen to his own inner voice rather than relying solely on others' opinions.

Finally, the king reaches the hermit's dwelling and asks him the third question about the most important thing to do. The hermit, engrossed in his task of digging up the ground, responds that the most important thing is to do good to others and focus on the present moment. The hermit's response teaches the king that the most important thing is to be fully present and engaged in helping others.

With these newfound insights, the king returns to his kingdom and applies what he has learned. He strives to be present, compassionate, and to act with wisdom and kindness in every situation, becoming a just and wise ruler.

"The Three Questions" emphasizes the importance of kindness, compassion, and being present in the here and now, offering valuable lessons about the true nature of wisdom and leadership.
