Brief Summary
‘An Excellent Father’ is actually an extract of a famous novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’ written by Jane Austen. Jane Austen was a female writer who wrote for the pleasure of writing and with a little hope of publication. Pride and Prejudice (1813) is one of her good pieces of novels in which the characters revolve around her sister. An excellent father tells us about the love and affection between father and daughter. This is the actual sketch of events of her life. She has taken actual characters in her novel. The lesson starts with the conversation between Mr Bennet and his wife at Netherfield Park which is vacant for a long time but is at last taken by a rich man namely Mr Bingley on rent. Mr Bingley is a rich man but unmarried. Mrs Bennet is concerned with the marriage of her daughters. She wishes Mr Bingley to marry one of her daughters so she forces Mr Bennet to meet Mr Bingley as soon as possible so as, to get this golden opportunity. Mr Bennet is a humorous character. He proves to be an excellent father when he meets Bingley without telling anyone in the family that he has met him. He makes fun of his wife and daughters Lizzy and Kitty.

In the end, he discloses that he has already met Mr Bingley. This brings happiness
to the family. This shows how much Mr Bennet is concerned about the marriage
of his daughters and also how an excellent father he is. This is why Mrs Bennet tells her daughters that their father is excellent.
