Chapter 16: Garbage In Garbage Out
Dear Students, in Chapter 15, you learned about the Air Around Us, in which you learned about the composition of air, the air is a mixture of many gases, air occupies space, winnowing, exchange of gases in the atmosphere, condensation, and presence of air in water and soil. You also learned that air is essential for all living organisms.
In this chapter, you will learn about
the Garbage
In Garbage Out. The following points will help you to
understand this chapter easily.
• Landfill is an area
where the garbage collected from a city or town is dumped. The area is later
converted into a park.
• Converting plant and
animal waste including that from the kitchen, into manure, is called composting.
• The method of making
compost from kitchen garbage using redworms is called vermicomposting.
• Paper can be recycled
to get useful products.
• Plastics cannot be
converted into less harmful substances by the process of composting.
• We need to generate
less waste and find ways of dealing with the increasing amount of garbage in
our surroundings.
Â
Let us try to answer some questions
taken from the NCERT Book of Science Class 6th. This Exercise is taken from the
same book.
Â
Exercises
Q1. Answer these questions:
a. Which kind of garbage is not
converted into compost by the red worms?
Â
Answer.
Garbage like polythene bags, plastic
pieces, broken glass, aluminum wrappers, nails, broken toys, and all inorganic
wastes are not converted into compost by the red worms.
Â
b. Have you seen any other organism
besides redworms, in your pit? If yes, try to find out their names. Draw
pictures of these.
Â
Answer.
Besides red worms there are earth
worms in the pit.
Â
Q2. Discuss:
a. Is garbage disposal the responsibility
only of the government?
Â
Answer.
Garbage disposal is not the
responsibility of the government only but it is also the responsibility of people
who throw heaps of garbage on the earth. If this garbage is not treated in
time this will cause hazardous diseases. So to keep ourselves healthy we should
also help the government in the disposal of the garbage.
Â
b. Is it possible to reduce the
problems relating to disposal of garbage?
Â
Answer.
Yes, it is possible to reduce the
problems relating to the disposal of garbage. Three practices will help us in
the reduction of garbage disposal problems. These three practices are Reduction
at source, Reuse of products, and Recycling of waste products.
Â
Q3. Think and answer:
a. What do you do with the leftover
food at home?
Â
Answer.
We throw the leftover food out so that
animals like dogs or birds will eat it.
Â
b. If you and your friends are given
the choice of eating, in a plastic plate or a banana leaf platter at a party,
which one would you prefer and why?
Â
Answer.
We would prefer to eat on a banana
platter because the banana platter is not harmful to our health. Moreover, it
can be decomposed easily. On the other hand, plastic is made from
non-biodegradable substances and is harmful to health.
Â
Q4. Do these activities:
a. Collect pieces of different kinds
of paper. Find out which of these can be recycled.
Â
Answer.
Most household, school trash, garbage
paper can be recycled.
Â
b. With the help of a lens look at the
pieces of paper you collected for the above question. Do you see any difference
in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper?
Â
Answer.
There may be a difference in the
design, size, or the colour of the paper.
Â
Q5. Activity-based questions:
a. Collect different kinds of
packaging material. What was the purpose for which each one was used? Discuss
in groups.
Â
Answer.
Polythene bags are used to carry household
things. Food packets are used to store food. Biscuit packets are made of
polythene. Most of the packaging materials are made of polythene used for packing
eatables.
Â
b. Give an example in which packaging
could have been reduced?
Â
Answer.
Packaging could have been reduced by
using a big jute or cloth bag for many items instead of a separate polythene bag
for individual items. For example, while shopping, carry one big bag for all
items.
Â
c. Write a story on how packaging increases
the amount of garbage.
Â
Answer.
Packaging often increases the amount
of garbage. When we are on a trip to any hill station, we see there, heaps of
garbage in dustbins because we carry so many eatables separately packed in
polythene bags.
Â
Q6. Do you think it is better to use
compost instead of chemical fertilizers? Why?
Answer.
Yes, it is better to use compost
instead of chemical fertilizers because compost is natural manure and is
neither harmful for the soil nor the organisms living in it. Compost is
pollution-free manure. It is cheap and can be made at the domestic level. On
the other hand, chemical fertilizers can cause water pollution and have many
harmful side effects.
