Chapter 1: Food – Where Does It Come From

 

Introduction

       Food is an essential requirement for living organisms. A living organism will die without food. In this chapter, you will learn about Food – Where Does It Come From. The following points will help you to understand this chapter easily.

     Food is essential for living organisms.

     We get food from plants and animals.

     The animals that provide milk and meat are called milch animals.

     Animals that provide meat and egg are called poultry animals.

     There is a lot of variation in the food eaten in different regions of India.

     The main sources of our food are plants and animals.

     Animals that eat only plants are called herbivores.

     Animals, which eat only animals are called carnivores.

     Animals, which eat both plants, as well as other animals, are called omnivores.

 

Let us try to answer some questions taken from the NCERT Book of Science Class 6th. This Exercise is taken from the same book.

Q1. Do you find that all living beings need the same kind of food?

 

Answer.

No, all living beings do not need the same kind of food. There is a lot of variation in the kind of food eaten in the world. Living beings are divided into three categories based on the food they eat, these are herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.

 

Q2. Name five plants and their parts that, we eat.

 

Answer.

Rice plant: seeds

Spinach: leaves

Maize: seeds

Apple plant: fruits

Sugarcane: stem

Animals, which eat both plants as well as other animals, are called omnivores. Man is called an omnivore because he eats both the products obtained from plants as well as, the products obtained from animals.
