1. Answer the following questions.

i) Kashmir is known for its handicrafts. Discuss?

Ans. Kashmir is well known for its handicrafts work since ancient times. Some of the most famous works of handicraft are ‘Namde saazi, ‘Gabe saazi’, ‘Hatchi kaam’, ‘Kaani kaam’, etc. Handicrafts flourished during the reign of Sultan Zain-ul-Abdin. Most common work includes the making of Qaleens, paper machie, embroidery, and wood carving. Kashmiri Qaleens and shawls are most popular throughout the world and these items are sold at highly expensive rates. Handicraft is a good source of income in Kashmir. A large proportion of the population is getting a good economic return for this work.

ii) Discuss the mineral-based industries of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ans. Mineral-based industries play a vital role in the increase of the economy in Jammu Kashmir. Many mineral-based industries have been established in Jammu and Kashmir for the extraction of minerals. Limestone, gypsum, bauxite, and clay are the main ingredients of the cement industry and are available in Baramulla, Anantnag, Reasi, and Basoli. Many industries and factories are run by JK Minerals Ltd and JK Cements Ltd for the purpose of getting consumer goods.

iii) Write a short note on the Agro-based industry of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh?

Ans. The economy of Jammu and Kashmir is based on farms and farming and therefore the agro-based industry is the most important industry that provides raw materials for other industries. In Jammu and Kashmir, paddy is produced in large quantities and for this purpose, a modern rice plant has been established in 1981 in Lethpora Pulwama. Horticulture is also well established in the valley and large people are associated with this sector. Large quantities of fruits such as cherries, apples, apricots, etc. are exported to the other states of the country.

iv) Write a short note on the tourism industry of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh?

Ans. One of the most important sources of income for Jammu and Kashmir is its tourism. Kashmir is popular throughout the world for its beautiful health resorts like Gulmarg and Pahalgam. The tourism industry is the backbone of the economy of Jammu and Kashmir. The beauty of Kashmir attracts a large number of people across the regions. The advancement in tourism due to this industry has increased the number of foreign tourists.

v) Write a short note on ‘Paper Machie’.

Ans. Paper Machie is a unique and attractive and exclusive handicraft of Kashmir. Paper and pulp are shaped into a variety of decorative articles and colorful designs are painted on them. The centers of production include Rainawari in Srinagar and Anantnag Districts.
