WORKING WITH THE TEXT
Answer the following questions:
Q1. What did Patrick think his cat was playing with? What was it really?
Ans. Patrick thought that his cat was playing with a doll. It was not a doll, but a man of the tiniest size.
Q2. Why did the little man grant Patrick a wish?
Q3. What was Patrick’s wish?
Ans. Patrick’s wish for the little man was to do all his homework till the end of the semester.
Q4. In what subjects did the little man need help to do Patrick’s homework?
Ans. The little man needed help in mathematics. Sometimes he needed help in history and English words also.
Q5. How did Patrick help him?
Ans. Patrick helped him by providing books. He worked hard by staying up nights.
Q6. Who do you think did Patrick’s homework-the the little man, or Patrick himself? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans. Patrick himself did his homework. Actually, it was his imagination. The writer shares this secret at the end of the lesson.

I. Study this sentence:
It was designed to stand 185 feet (56m) high and was constructed of white marble.
This sentence consists of two parts:
a. It was designed to stand 185 feet (56 m) high.
b. [It] was constructed of white marble.
Each part gives complete meaning and is, therefore, called an independent clause.
Notice that the two clauses have the same subject, ‘It’, but it has been omitted in
the second clause. These independent clauses have been joined by ‘and’, and made
into a compound sentence. You can frame a compound sentence by using but and or
also as in:
Now join the following pairs of clauses by using and/but/or:

LET’S WRITE
A. This story has a lot of rhyming words, as a poem does. Can you write out some parts of it like a poem, so that the rhymes come at the end of separate lines?

He had a little wool shirt with old-fashioned britches, and a high tall hat much like a witch’s.
“Help me! Help me!” he’d say. And Patrick would have to help-in whatever way.

C. Rewrite the following incomplete sentences carefully, so that the reader does not have to guess what is left out.

Do you think a carton is a serious drawing? Why or why not?
Ans. 1. The cartoon is about the practice of homework and child labour, in which a child is advised to do his homework instead of reading books on The Laws Against Child Labour.
2. Yes, because there are humorous characters seen in the picture. The lines also sound funny.
3. Cartoons are always drawn in a funny manner, so the drawing is funny.
